A Lost Artform
July 23, 2009
This past week, I spent four days at the fabulous Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. It has been a hotel and resort since 1778 and is a wonderful trip back in time, elegance and southern hospitality. There are touches of history and charm all over the hotel. On the edges of the main building are little rooms for playing cards, 4 o’clock tea and simple conversation. Nestled among these many little alcoves I found my favorite one: the writing room. Here, on a large antique double desk (highlighted in The MidAtlantic Antiques Magazine), you can sit and write letters. How thoughtful! The desk is complete with beautifully embossed stationary and postcards to send to your loved ones.
Seeing this beautiful writing desk, and a room reserved for the sole purpose of using it, made me realize how much of letter writing is a lost art. What a shame. With a plethora of technology beckoning, think about the last time you actually sat down and wrote a letter to a loved one? Probably too long is my guess. I felt that same way, so right then and there I sat myself down and wrote letters to my two oldest children—just to let them know how much I miss them and love them. It felt great.
Here’s the challenge. Take the time today to write an old-fashioned letter to someone you care about. You’ll feel great and they’ll feel appreciated beyond measure. Who knows, you may even get one back! What was that my mother used to say… “To get a letter you need to write a letter! Try it and see what happens; a little southern charm never hurt anyone!
